The menu at The Angler, located in Worcester County, in Westminster, is, for the most part, traditional New England chowder house: crab cakes, Buffalo shrimp, PEI mussels, oysters, chowder, Fried whole belly clams, Pretzel encrusted halibut, Dill cucumber salmon, Fish and chips, and Pan-seared scallops.
It’s the daily specials where Girard-Simone cooks up something extra like Black and white sesame ahi tuna with cucumber slaw and dynamite sauce or Baked cod topped with a seafood cream sauce and served with sauteed baby greens and toasted garlic bread.
Yelp foodie Becky H. of Winchendon said she’s hooked on the chowder.
“I had the NE Clam Chowder that was so flavorful and to die for,” Becky H. said. “Their scallops were cooked to perfection and plated so nicely. They weren't overcooked, melters in my mouth. The space was a bit tight and seemed to hold only a few people. But, that's ok. The tables had very neat old fish hooks embedded in them, with a gloss over. So, one could enjoy all the different hooks with the feathers at the end. Very neat detail!”
Yelp foodie and self-described globe trotter Rosie P. of Manhattan said The Angler is one of her most favorite places to eat in the world. She was won over by the restaurant’s fresh seafood and friendly staff.
“I have traveled the world and this place - accidentally stumbled across on a road trip -- is now one of my favorite places to eat ON EARTH,” said Rosie P. “Amazing food. Freshest of seafood. They have classic dishes as well as innovative ways to prepare their incredible seafood - but not gimmicky. And the people who work there are super friendly and attentive.”
The decor in The Angler’s dining room features sea-blue walls and fishing trophies - including a marlin. The tables and stools are wood and some are inlaid with decorative fish hooks. There’s a small bar where craft cocktails are mixed and a tightly-packed fish market underneath a chalkboard menu. A ship captain’s wheel greets people at the door.
Online reviewers said they appreciated the good prices at The Angler. While many reviewers found the staff friendly and helpful, others found them a bit salty - which sounds perfect for a fish market.
Yelp foodie Danielle M. of Manchester, New Hampshire, said she likes the half-fish market-half-restaurant vibe at The Angler and appreciates their gluten-free menu. In addition to the regularly available “gf” dishes, The Angler serves an entire gluten-free menu one night per week.
“One of my favorite local spots,” Danielle M. said. “The Angler is a cozy restaurant with a warm atmosphere. I love that it's half restaurant, half-fish market. The staff always greet us kindly. My boyfriend is gluten-free so it's great to know that there are so many great options on gluten-free nights!”
